Music ~ Drumming ~ Singing

Many musicians frequent the beach on any given day including our resident Rekkerz who occasionally set up drums and keyboards for a good jam on the beach north-central.

Other flavors include the acoustic accoutrements of the Lookinglass band and many single artists and talents too numerous to mention.

Feel free to join in the jamming, singing and drumming that often occurs in many areas on the beach on a daily basis and goes into the evening with sunsets "Salute to the Sun".  Bring your instruments, voice, percussion and drums and join with the many musician pods found around the main beach area at Wreck Beach Trail 6 most every day or night...

What kinds of people come to the beach...

People looking for some free-spirited fun and relaxation that offers much variety and choice, are the kinds of people that frequent Wreck Beach.  Every kind of person you can imagine from toddlers, teens to grandparents and everything in between, plus gays, straights, families, all races and so on.

There is no limit to the kinds of people nude or otherwise that attend this wonderful clothing-optional beach.   So as eccentric or ordinary as you may be, you will fit right in perfectly.

"Crocodile"

An eccentric but brilliant man, this hairy looking character is usually wandering the beach busy on some community task and often wears outrageous outfits or accessories for a laugh.  He has been a fixture on the beach for as long as one can remember and although he may look questionable, he is very harmless.

Crocodile personally takes care of many things on the beach of his own good will such as sifting the sand to clean it up of debris or glass, hauling logs where needed, or support to build the vendors locations.  He often brings down corn to share and can be counted on to help in most any given situation that arises or creates challenge for the community.

"Salute to the Sun"

As is tradition for as long as one remembers, join in the salute to the sun as it sets every evening with the whole beach community cheering it on in gratitude for another  wonderful day.

From a more metaphysical or spiritually energetic perspective, the five minutes before sunrise and sunset are the most powerful times for manifesting whatever you focus on, so use it for creating great thoughts for your life.

Vendors & Vendors Row

Vendors Row is commonly referred to as the merchants who set up towards the trees at the back row in the more relaxed section of Wreck Beach. Beginning at the base of Trail 6 stairs and extending all the way down to the rock abutment you will see several Flintstone-style concession stands.

Unlike any other beach in Canada, the Wreck Beach Preservation Society along with the beach community has worked hard with the powers that be to avoid the traditional concession stand eyesores becoming a reality here.  Instead, the casual food fare on the beach is available from mostly licensed food vendors that have passed food safe regulations and paid a fee to sell their wares legally on the beach.  The Parks Board regularly visits these vendors to make sure they keep up with safe food practices, so you can rest assured when purchasing from naked vendors that the food is good enough to eat.

Please be conscious not make yourself at home in the vending areas near the back row, or you may have to move when the crew arrives to set up for business.  Hours are very relaxed and the merchants tend to set up whenever they feel like it depending on the weather that day.  Usually by 11 am you will see most of them making their presence known.

If the weather is slow to become sunny, you may be wise to bring food just in case most of the regular merchants don't show up.  As a rule, when there are several sunny days in a row and one so-so late starting day, the vendors are more likely to be there than on a single sunny day of the week that suddenly appears unexpectedly.  Regardless, there may often be wandering licensed and unlicensed vendors who wing it in the moment if the weather changes.  Feel free to ask if they have a license if you are worried about food safe quality...

Massage on the Beach Trail 6 Vendors Row

Condensed Wreck Beach Guide

There is nothing like having a massage on the beach on a glorious sunny day.  It takes relaxation and release of the body-mind-spirit to a whole other level that is hard to describe.

Diana had a permanent location in the quieter zone of Wreck Beach towards the back where she shared personal healing, first-aid and massage for 5 years til summer of  2004.  However, the two massage tables she had built disappeared one day and she has not had the drive to re-build the site again as it took many men, tools and energy.  She now just enjoys her quiet off time at the beach and  you may find her hanging out and singing in the musician circles.

Diana is still available for private sessions at her 4th Avenue & McDonald location in  Kitsilano by calling 604-216-0260.

Other vendors may still do massage in the busy front section of the beach.  Please take time to watch them in action and see if what they do resonates with your needs.  Take note if they also offer fresh sheets and clean hands for each client as well before indulging in some relaxation for yourself.

Diana offers Intuitive Swedish Massage in Studio or Mobile Massage with professional table or chair.   Email or see the  private sessions page, events page or contact us page for more info on these and other services available.

Other Products and Services...

There are many services and products available on the beach.  Sometimes you may find wandering vendors offering their wares as they walk through the crowd.  You will have to listen to their by-lines to see what they offer.  Other vendors will set up a space to market their healing, jewellery, art, carvings, clothing etc. and although some are regular vendors each year, only a few set up in consistent locations so  you can find them easily, mostly near the back row at Trail 6 beach area.

Some of the wandering or stationary services that show up yearly may include wreck beach postcards, massage oils & suntan lotions, tarot card readings, henna tattoos, body painting,  wood carving, personal portrait sketches, caricatures, energy healing, casino games, scrabble letters, poetry readings, books to read, umbrella rentals, art and so on.

The early summer months often find more new transient people trying their hand at vending to make a fast buck.  Most find out quickly that it is grueling hard work to walk the beach and be in the sun all day and sales can be blown at the whim of the weather or crowds at any given moment.

Apparently there are vendors who sell natural herb and mushroom treats or alcohol, all which are illegal to be sold on the beach.  Keep in mind that the police do occasionally frequent the beach on the lookout for such transactions and may even be undercover.  So,  please, if you choose to indulge yourself with  local herbs of your own, be conscious of others so you do not ignore or  invade others personal values and right to comfortable enjoyment on the beach with their families and small children.
